What a Port Scan Shows

beginner 40 min 3 tasks

See one basic port scan of a Purple Edge lab host, read what it found, and decide what each open port means for the people defending that host.

By the end of this lesson you can restate when you are allowed to scan, explain what a port scan is, read the open, closed and filtered results of one basic scan, compare the outside view (the scan) with the inside view (ss -tln), and decide what a defender does about a port that should not be open. There is no lab in this lesson: the one scan is shown together with its exact output. It was run from the lab client secfund (10.0.0.5) against the lab web server web01 (10.0.0.20), a Purple Edge machine that is allowed to be scanned.
